Youth and Jobs: About Being the "Just Right" Person.
Boys' Clubs of America, New York, NY.
This report is a synthesis of interviews conducted during the youth employment survey to determine the most appropriate role for Boys Clubs in responding to the employment needs of youths. Quotes and anecdotes are provided from the interviews with 360 young people, Boys Club staff, board members, business people, educators, community leaders, parents, and others. An introduction is followed by profiles of five young people's experiences with the reality of work. They represent these groups: the forgotten, lonely ones; average, normal teenagers; the able and ambitious ones; those who leave school; and the hard-knocked kids. The next section presents a many-angled view of work and its impacts on the lives of Black, Hispanic, Chicano, White, Native American, and Asian youths, aged 10-21. The adult perspective is the focus of the next section. It considers the responsibility of those in position to help--home and parents, schools and educators, communities and employers, and Boys Club staff. A list of survey conclusions and implications for Boys Clubs is divided into these categories: development of motivation and self-confidence, development of work attitudes and skills, acquisition of job and career skills, and job development. The final section discusses program initiatives that have been suggested by survey conclusions and implications that are most appropriate for emphasis in Boys Clubs. (YLB)
