Understanding and Using Demographic Data: Terms and Measures.
Lilley, Stephen
This publication provides program planners and others with information and analytical tools for using demographic data in program planning, implementation, and evaluation. The report reviews the importance of demographic data and their relevance to programs and proper implementation of laws, discusses the collection of demographic information by federal and state government agencies, explains demographic terminology, and presents some measures that can be used to describe a situation or analyze change or impact. The publication describes nine areas of demographic data: population change, age and sex composition, fertility, mortality, migration, census geography and population distribution, marital characteristics and family groups, housing, and employment and income. Each section includes a brief statement about the importance of the particular demographic concept, definitions of important measures of the concept, and equations and how to use them. The report contains 18 references which provided data on North Carolina for use in examples and sample calculations. (SV)
