The Development of an Orientation Manual for Nova University Programs for Higher Education Regional Cluster Students.
Kole, James P.
This study surveyed the regional cluster doctoral students in Nova University's Programs for Higher Education to determine their orientation needs and then developed a comprehensive orientation manual. Needs assessment survey forms were received from 24 regional cluster students (out of 29 survey forms sent) as well as 9 South Florida local cluster students (out of 16 forms sent). Related literature on traditional and non-traditional orientation programming in higher education was reviewed. Results indicated that the majority of regional cluster students wanted to be furnished with an orientation manual. Regional cluster students felt that there was not enough regular and timely communication among the program administrators, cluster coordinator, Nova faculty, research associate, and new students. Recommendations included: increase communication, provide "tips for success" in achieving the doctoral degree, include examples of practicum proposals and practicums in the orientation manual, and provide ongoing orientation via conference calls when appropriate. Results of the local cluster orientation survey were not conclusive due to the low response rate. Appendices contain survey forms, cover letters, checklists, and procedures. Includes 12 references.
