Port Arthur Alive: Exploring Past and Present, 3. Background.
Tasmanian Education Dept., Hobart (Australia).
Part 3 of this five part project asks students of the Tasmanian region of Australia to explore the history of Port Arthur, a 19th century penal colony located in Tasmania. The project is based on three ideas: (1) studying history can be educational and enjoyable; (2) imagination is an essential part of studying history; and (3) history is most of all a means by which to seek to understand the present--one's self and society as it exists now. Part 3 of the project provides historical background on Port Arthur. There are ten sections: (1) British society and transportation; (2) crimes and penalties 1800-1835; (3) Port Arthur--a description; (4) controlling the convicts; (5) punishment and penitence; (6) religion; (7) industry; (8) escape; (9) private lives; and (10) health, sickness, and death.
