Exploring the Communication Practices of University Faculty and the Parental Expectations Regarding First-Year Students: A Mixed Methods Study
Sean Heffron
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, University of Bridgeport
The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to (a) learn more about first-year parents' expectations of communication with the university, (b) learn more about communication practices of university faculty and staff regarding communication with parents, (c) examine the reasons behind the expectations and practices of both parent groups and faculty/staff groups, (d) compare expectations from parents of first-year students to the practices of university faculty and staff, and (e) use the results to create more intentional university-parent outreach programs that can benefit first-year students. The study aims to provide information for future researchers and practitioners to develop initiatives and programs geared toward including parents in a student's academic experience during freshman year. Such intentional parent programs could provide a complete and effective student service program that is consistent with best practices related to Student Development Theory while also within FERPA guidelines as they are written.
