India's higher education system is one of the largest systems of this kind in the world and is also the fastest growing sector in the country. With the increasing demand for quality higher education in the country it has become imminent that a consistent plan is laid for the growth and enhancement of quality higher education in India. A sound higher education sector plays an important role in economic growth and development of a nation. Higher education, in terms of its relevance and importance, enjoys a significant position in the education system as it equips people with appropriate knowledge and skills to be gainfully employed. India has one of the largest systems of higher education in the world offering facility of education and training in almost all aspects of human creativity and intellectual endeavour. In the context of current demographic structure of India where the majority of population is below the age of 25 years, the role of higher education is critical. The general education mainly consists of higher education courses in arts, commerce and science, the technical education on the other hand comprises of programmes of education, research and training in engineering technology, architecture, town planning, management, pharmacy and applied arts and crafts. Professional education includes courses in medical education, law and other specialized fields. While there has been a significant development in the field of higher education in India, it still lags behind in comparison to many developed countries. In fact developing countries like China, Malaysia and South Korea fare better than India on many counts. The situation gets compounded as India has a daunting task of providing employment opportunities to its growing workforce, which can only be possible if it has a sound higher education system. Low enrolment rates, gender disparities, social inequities, regional disparities, faculty vacancies in institutes, quality of faculty, low level of accreditation, limited motivation for learning due to evaluation process in colleges, inadequate focus on research, lack of adequate infrastructure and equipment, low employability and skills of graduates, lack of clear-cut policies for private sector participation, lack of autonomy, administrative burden on universities, lack of appropriate structures, financial constraints, ambiguity over regulations and conflict of authority are the key issues facing the higher education sector in India. This book offers an international and comparative view on issues and prospects in higher education, ranging from policies to practices, mainly based on research results and empirical evidence, aiming at questioning the concept and its uses which are not only social constructions but also political ones. Far from being a neutral or technical concept, higher educational problems and prospects is heavily infused with values which must be traced, analysed and made critical to understand its impacts, backlashes and unintended outcomes on higher education systems, institutions, academics and students. The book is addressed to an international audience and in particular to higher education scholars and professionals. Those who are involved in higher education assessment, members of professional bodies and organizations in the higher education field, students in education, but also policy makers and the public opinion at large will profit from the works of a selected group of scholars coming from a variety of countries. A sense of disquietude seems ever present when discussing new digital practices. The transformations incurred through these can be profound, troublesome in nature and far-reaching.
