Kumar, David D.; And Others – 1994
Systems incorporating two advanced technologies, hypermedia systems and intelligent tutors, are examined with respect to their potential impact on science education. The conceptual framework underlying these systems is discussed first. Applications of systems are then presented with examples of each in operation within the context of science…

Braathen, Per Christian; Hewson, Peter W. – 1988
This paper presents a case study involving a small group of students enrolled in a tutorial program learning introductory college chemistry. The underlying theoretical framework of this investigation was a constructivist view of learning, but more specifically it was based on Ausubel's theory of meaningful learning. The findings of this…

Cline, Judith D.; McLaughlin, T. F. – B.C. Journal of Special Education, 1994
The use of classwide peer tutoring with six at-risk fourth graders resulted in moderate to substantial improvements in spelling performance for five students. In a second experiment, the addition of "Language Master" to the tutoring process resulted in only slightly greater improved performance for two of four students. (Author/DB)

Dunlap, Linda L. – 1987
This study investigated young children's ability to solve probability problems and studied the cognitive processes proposed by Piaget and Inhelder as necessary to solve probability problems. The effects of tutorial and self-discovery training were measured and discussed. Results from 168 first-graders in five training conditions indicated that:…

Vadasy, Patricia F.; Jenkins, Joseph R.; Antil, Lawrence R.; Wayne, Susan K.; O'Connor, Rollanda E. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1997
Twenty at-risk first graders received 30 minutes of individual instruction from community tutors four days a week for up to 23 weeks. Subjects outperformed the control group on all reading, decoding, spelling and segmenting, and writing measures. Tutors who implemented the program with a high degree of fidelity achieved significant effect sizes in…

Carnine, Douglas W. – 1987
This report summarizes a series of eight research studies related to the use of computer-assisted instruction (CAI) with mildly handicapped students at the junior high or high school level. Through videodisc and CAI the studies isolated the effects of the following design variables: (1) review cycles; (2) size of teaching sets; (3) explicit…

Coates, Keith S.; McLaughlin, T. F. – B.C. Journal of Special Education, 1992
Evaluation of effects of parent tutoring in word recognition with flash cards with a slow learning seven year old found neither number of words read or frequency of errors was changed by the intervention, but subjective measures did support the intervention's effectiveness. Results suggest the need for parent training for effective home…

Abbott, Sylvia P.; Reed, Elizabeth; Abbott, Robert D.; Berninger, Virginia W. – Learning Disability Quarterly, 1997
Sixteen children with severe reading problems in first grade received a year-long individual tutorial intervention. Growth curve analyses found significant gains on measures of orthographic and phonological coding, word identification, word attack skills, reading comprehension, letter automaticity, and spelling and marginally significant gains in…

Walters, John; Marcus, Laurence R. – 1985
Eight New Jersey State colleges which shared essentially the same goals and offered similar financial aid packages were studied in order to determine the relationship between persistence rates of disadvantaged students in opportunity programs and the role of faculty in such programs. Student data were provided by New Jersey's Equal Opportunity…

Eiserman, William D. – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1988
The effects of three types of tutoring treatments on the attitudes of learning-disabled and control students (n=124) in grades K-6 were compared. The tutoring programs, involving sign language and reading, produced beneficial effects on attitudes about peers, school, and learning, whereas control students did not experience comparable gains.…

Lazerson, David B.; And Others – Journal of Learning Disabilities, 1988
This study determined the effects of using truant and tardy junior high school learning-disabled students as tutors for younger learning-disabled pupils. After six weeks of tutoring, most of the 16 tutors showed a significant increase toward an internal orientation of locus of control and a decrease in truant/tardy behaviors. (Author/JDD)

Murray, Tom; And Others – 1988
This paper evaluates the strengths and limitations of a computer tutor designed to help students understand physics concepts. The tutor uses a teaching strategy called "bridging analogies" that previous research has demonstrated to be successful in one-to-one tutoring.
