Reviews research which indicates that the knowledge structures of professional literatures are systematically different from those of scientific literatures, and that these differences are consistent with theories of scientific knowledge such as those advanced by Kuhn, Polyani, and Zinman. Citation analysis of a systematic sample of 27 historical and historiographic articles was used to study the citation patterns of secondary sources in the history of technology. Examines information transfer in atmospheric physics by tracing one paper through five years of citations and suggesting patterns for highly cited papers.
