Lehman, Jeffrey R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Questionnaire responses from 193 high schools indicate that very few science teachers use microcomputers regularly in classrooms. Descriptions of schools/science departments, background information on faculty using microcomputers, and nature/extent of utilization are discussed along with possible causes of limited use and recommendations for…

O'Brien, George E.; Pizzini, Edward L. – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
This study demonstrated that abstracts composed with the aid of a computer were rated higher than those without a computer. Categories assessed included spelling/punctuation, organization/design, sentence structure, clarity, and overall quality. Subjects were 68 students participating in the 1984 Secondary Student Training (SST) Research Program…

Bazler, Judith A. – School Science and Mathematics, 1991
A summer project in which middle school teachers worked with scientists to increase their knowledge of current scientific developments is described. Teacher's logs and notebooks, research scientists' logs, and the education advisor's log were used to compile a multidimensional description of the project's evolution and outcomes. (KR)

Lehman, Jeffrey R. – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
Surveyed science educators to determine (1) if colleges and universities are providing science teachers with computer-oriented training and content-dependent applications and (2) what role science educators have in this training. A majority of respondents provide microcomputer opportunities for both preservice and inservice teachers. (JN)

Lindbeck, Joy S.; Dambrot, Faye – School Science and Mathematics, 1986
Secondary teachers in a workshop on overcoming computer and math anxiety and students in a programming course were given measures of anxiety and achievement. Low mathematical ability and coursework were related to math and computer anxiety and negative attitudes. Attitudes improved for the teachers but not the students. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computer Oriented Programs, Educational Research, Manipulative Materials, Mathematics Anxiety

Lawrenz, Frances – School Science and Mathematics, 1985
Describes changes in teacher attitudes after completion of an inservice energy education workshop. Although there was a decrease in favorable attitudes towards curricular change, there was a modest, positive effect on participants (N=132) which should help to promote energy education. (DH)

Damarin, Suzanne K.; And Others – School Science and Mathematics, 1988
Investigated was a sequence of computer-based activities on estimation with 108 students in grades 9, 10, and 12. The activities were appropriate for students at each grade level; each class improved their estimation scores significantly. (MNS)
Descriptors: Computer Oriented Programs, Computer Software, Educational Research, Estimation (Mathematics)

Rowland, Paul McD.; Stuessy, Carol L. – School Science and Mathematics, 1990
Describes an inservice teacher education program to provide science process skills without the presence of university personnel. Presents methods of evaluation and the results of the evaluation. (YP)
Descriptors: Elementary School Teachers, Inservice Teacher Education, Interprofessional Relationship, Mathematics Instruction

Swineford, Lois A.; Holtan, Boyd D. – School Science and Mathematics, 1991
The activities of a teacher who developed and piloted an eclectic model in an eighth grade mathematics classroom are described. Peer tutoring, cooperative learning, and mastery learning elements were selected and combined into a classroom program designed to increase student mathematics success. (KR)
Descriptors: Cooperative Learning, Grade 8, Junior High Schools, Mastery Learning

Yager, Robert E. – School Science and Mathematics, 1989
Offers information for new professionals to get involved with funded efforts supported by a variety of agencies. Described are four sources of funds including government grants, private foundations, industry, and community collaboration. Suggestions for proposal writing and contacts for funding are listed. (YP)
