Nesher, Pearla – For the Learning of Mathematics, 1986
The conceptual difference between understanding and algorithmic performance is examined first. Then some dilemmas that flow from these distinctions are discussed. (MNS)

Carraher, Terezinha Nunes; Schliemann, Analucia Dias – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
Fifty Brazilian children aged seven-13 were individually given addition and subtraction exercises. Counting was the preferred procedure, with use of school-taught algorithms limited. Some children decomposed numbers into tens and units and then worked at both levels. They rarely referred to previous results when doing related exercises. (MNS)

Resnick, Lauren B. – 1984
Research recurrently indicates that children who have difficulty with arithmetic often use systematic routines that yield wrong answers. Recent research has focused less on identifying the most common errors among groups of children and more on analyzing individual children's errors. This paper considers the source of systematic errors in…

Carraher, Terezinha Nunes; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1987
Sixteen Brazilian third graders aged 8-13 were given problems involving multidigit computation. School-taught algorithms were likely to be used in school-taught problems, with little carry-over to real problem situations, but resulted in more incorrect answers. (MNS)

Mandeville, Garrett K. – 1988
This paper describes and evaluates a computerized system, MATCH, which is being used in South Carolina to match or link student records from year to year. The functioning of MATCH and its specific features are described, and its use in matching student test scores is detailed. The problem of mismatched records and the use of visual editing to…

Davis, Robert B. – 1983
The ideas and techniques involved in learning about fractions were investigated with students in grades 1-12, in the first 3 years of colleges, in community college mathematics courses, and in graduate school. Also included were some high school mathematics teachers, some mathematicians, and some retired persons. Part I provides the rationale and…

Carrier, Carol; And Others – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1985
Students from six fourth-grade classes were paired and randomly assigned to computer or worksheet treatments on multiplication and division. Those using computer-based drill-and-practice programs made greater gains on some tests of basic facts, but had no higher retention of algorithms. (MNS)

Resnick, Lauren B.; Gelman, Rochel – 1985
Most of the research on mathematical and scientific thinking has been concerned with uncovering knowledge structures and reasoning processes in people of different levels of competence. How these structures and processes are acquired has only recently become a major concern. Thus, some of the major research on mathematical and scientific thinking…

Suydam, Marilyn N., Ed.; Kasten, Margaret L., Ed. – Investigations in Mathematics Education, 1984
This issue contains abstracts and critical comments for 11 articles. Three articles focus on problem solving; the remainder concern understanding of the equals sign, mathematical structure, mathematical abilities, the role of language in tasks involving sets, sex differences in mathematical errors, subtraction, algorithms as schemes, and…

Lampert, Magdalene – 1985
The concept of multiplication is described and illustrated using several different representational systems. A conceptual approach to teaching mathematics is compared with the procedural approach commonly found in the school curriculum. Four different methods of representing the multiplication process with numbers larger than ten are presented:…
