Yuan, Kun; Le, Vi-Nhuan – RAND Corporation, 2014
In 2010, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation's Education Program has established the Deeper Learning Initiative, which focuses on students' development of deeper learning skills (i.e., the mastery of core academic content, critical-thinking, problem-solving, collaboration, communication, and "learn-how-to-learn" skills). Two test…

Polly, Drew – Journal of Computers in Mathematics and Science Teaching, 2008
American students continue to struggle on measures of student achievement. This study employed Hierarchical Linear Modeling to estimate a two-level model and examine the influences of calculator use and teachers' instructional practices on student achievement in mathematics amongst first-grade students. The outcome variable was mathematics test…

Hembree, Ray – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1987
Results of 120 studies were combined by meta-analysis to determine effects on mathematics test performance of factors other than knowledge of content. Conditions that enhanced performance included testwiseness training, praise, word problem pictures, and frequent testing. Conditions depressing or not affecting performance were also noted. (MNS)

Hembree, Ray – 1987
This bibliography identifies reports of research on correlates, causes, effects, and treatment of test anxiety. The listing was developed for a synthesis of research, performed by meta-analysis at Adrian College, Michigan in 1986-87. Guidelines for including studies were applied as follows: (1) the research concerned academic test anxiety, using…

Simon, Marty – 1986
Through individual interviews with remedial and precalculus university students, five characteristics of the student were identified that influence whether a diagram is used in solving a problem and whether its use is successful. The interviews also suggested a set of subskills that contribute to the overall ability to draw effective diagrams.…

Stiff, Lee V. – School Science and Mathematics, 1988
Problem solving by example is an intermediate step toward mastering problem-solving heuristics. Discussed are problem-solving processes by using two problem examples. Emphasized are heuristics cataloging in a problem-solving log, and approaches to solutions, not the solutions themselves. (YP)
Descriptors: Heuristics, Mathematical Concepts, Mathematics Achievement, Mathematics Education

Gliner, Gail S. – School Science and Mathematics, 1989
Examines the students' understanding of mathematical structure and the relationship between problem solving and the identification of the structure in 13 word problems. Multidimensional scaling and hierarchical cluster analysis were used to assess how subjects organized word problems in their minds. (YP)

Levain, Jean-Pierre – Educational Studies in Mathematics, 1992
Discusses how students at the end of the French primary school-cycle (10- to 11-year-old pupils) resolve multiplication and related division problems within an assessment perspective taking into account the 3 factors of the problem's representational structure, the numerical values used, and the context of the problem statement. (25 references)…

Zambo, Ron; Hess, Robert – 1994
The majority of research investigating gender-related differences in problem-solving ability has focused on the product of word problem solving--the problem solution. This paper reports an investigation of potential gender-related effects on sixth-graders of an explicitly stated problem-solving plan. Two versions of the test were given: the…

Biron, Diane; Bednarz, Nadine – 1989
This research was concerned with the clarification of the role that the external representation process (e.g. drawing) plays in children's solving of complex arithmetic problems. Fourteen children in the 10- to 12-year-old age range were asked to represent and solve five complex arithmetic problems (three with temporal organization of data, two…

Mann, George; Frame, Norman – 1989
The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of two types of teacher inservice education programs upon fourth-grade students' achievement in solving mathematics story problems. Participating teachers attended two types of teacher inservice education programs; a traditional program, and a brief, narrowly focused special program (2.5 hours…

Yerushalmy, Michal; And Others – 1988
From 1984 through 1988, the authors worked with teachers using an inquiry approach to teach high school geometry courses with the aid of the "Geometric Supposers." Problems are a critical component of the approach because they focus attention and energy and guide students in the application, integration, and extension of knowledge.…

Ethington, Corinna A. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1990
Investigates patterns of sex differences for responses to problems across the countries involved in the Second International Mathematics Study. Reports no substantial gender effects on any of the content areas using the median polishing method. (YP)
Descriptors: Cross Cultural Studies, Data Interpretation, Foreign Countries, Grade 8

Kouba, Vicky L.; And Others – Arithmetic Teacher, 1988
Reports the third grade and seventh grade results of the fourth mathematics assessment of the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Summarizes the major results of the performance on number, operations, and word problem items. Some examples of data are given. (PK)
Descriptors: Computation, Educational Assessment, Educational Research, Elementary School Mathematics
Hembree, Ray – 1990
This bibliography lists reports of research on problem solving in mathematics, with specific regard to experiments, correlations, and other regional studies. The listing supports a research integration, performed by meta-analysis at Adrian College, Michigan, in 1989-1990. Guidelines for including studies were applied as follows: (1) the study…
