Feng, Gary – Journal of Cognition and Development, 2011
Eye tracking offers a powerful research tool for developmental scientists. In this brief article, the author introduces the methodology and issues associated with its applications in developmental research, beginning with an overview of eye movements and eye-tracking technologies, followed by examples of how it is used to study the developing mind…

Bigelow, A. E. – Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness, 1992
Comparison of 2 totally blind, 2 visually impaired, and 9 normally sighted children (ages 5-8) on tasks of visual perspective taking found that the totally blind children were older than the other children when they mastered the tasks, made the highest percentage of errors before mastery, and made different errors. (Author/DB)
Descriptors: Blindness, Cognitive Development, Partial Vision, Problem Solving

Hogrefe, G.-Juergen; And Others – Child Development, 1986
A series of six experiments compares young children's competence in attributing absence of knowledge (ignorance) to their competence in attributing a false belief to the other. (HOD)
Descriptors: Attribution Theory, Beliefs, Cognitive Development, Epistemology

Flavell, John H.; And Others – Child Development, 1989
Examines the ability to differentiate appearance-reality and Level Two perspective-taking in tactile modality among a total of 92 children aged two-four years in three studies. The results indicate that three-year-olds find tactile appearance-reality and Level Two perspective-taking tasks easier than visual ones. (RJC)
Descriptors: Cognitive Development, Perceptual Development, Perspective Taking, Preschool Children

Quinn, Paul C.; Eimas, Peter D. – Merrill-Palmer Quarterly, 1986
Reviews the research literature on the abilities of infants to categorize visual information on dot patterns; schematic faces; hue; and orientation. (HOD)
Descriptors: Classification, Cognitive Development, Cognitive Processes, Cognitive Psychology
Korac, Nada – Educational Communication and Technology Journal, 1988
Purposes a semiotic model for analyzing messages of the cinematic medium in film and television, and demonstrates its applicability to the study of children's comprehension of these messages. Highlights include the effects of visual and temporal features on comprehension; film and photography; and cognitive-developmental factors in comprehension.…

Halford, Graeme S.; And Others – Developmental Psychology, 1986
Reports on a study in which children aged 7 to 9 years and 11 to 13 years were asked to judge which one out of three wooden blocks would float, given weight and volume information for each block relative to a block that was known to float. Indicates that judgments may have been based on the size-weight illusion. (HOD)

Park, Eundeok; Bin, I. – Visual Arts Research, 1995
Analyzes the research strategies, stimuli, subjects, statistical strategies, and relative variables in 34 empirical studies on children's representation of three-dimensional objects. The studies fell into three categories: children's representation of spatial relationships within an object, between two objects, and studies that included both. (MJP)
