World of Our Mothers: The Women's Page of the "Jewish Daily Forward" in 1919.
Seller, Maxine Schwartz
In 1919 the "Jewish Daily Forward" published in New York City was the leading Yiddish language newspaper in the world. This analysis explores how the themes of socialism, feminism, and Americanization were defined and developed on the women's pages, and what advice and information the page transmitted to its immigrant readers about each theme. Those columnists cited saw socialism as a compassionate political program that would reconstruct society. Women were urged to attack low wages through unionization and legislative action. "The Forward" also provided insight into daily problems of its readers. Suggestions were made concerning behavior and lifestyles appropriate to socialist women and their husbands. Women's suffrage, considered inevitable, was linked with political and economic equality. Articles about notable women, including both women in the work force and homemakers, fostered self-respect. The importance of Americanization reflected both in editorial policy and views of readers. Help was offered in forms of advice that facilitated the Americanization of immigrant women and their entry into the middle class. Emphasizing the socialistic approach held by many readers, editors of this page educated others toward that approach, while offering sympathetic yet limited help in adapting to a new environment.
