Equating Practical Examinations.
Lunz, Mary E.; And Others
This paper describes and illustrates a method for equating examinations with multiple facets (i.e., items, examinees, judges, tasks, and rating scales). The data are from the practical section of two histotechnology certification examinations. The first practical examination involved 210 examinees, 14 judges, 15 slides, 3 tasks, and 2 rating scales. The second examination involved 301 examinees, 18 judges, 15 slides, 3 tasks, and 2 rating scales. The Rasch model is extended in the facets model to accommodate all facets of the practical examination. The elements of each facet are calibrated to a common log-linear scale. The variables defined for each facet are found to be definable and invariant across examinee groups. The principles of common element equating are then applied in the multiple facet situation. Two examinations are calibrated and the necessary common elements included. The items and the judges are found to be slightly easier or more lenient on the second examination. To equate examinations and secure equivalent standards, the scale of the second examination is adjusted to match the scale of the first examination. Four data tables, one figure, and five graphs are included. (TJH)
