Eichler, Margrit; Bullen, Mary
The myths and realities of Canadian families in the past and in the present are examined. This booklet is designed to introduce 11th and 12th grade students to concepts of families from a sociological perspective. Students analyze the facts and construct logical approaches to social issues affecting families and society. Seven chapters are included: Our Images of Families in the Past: Myth or Reality? Industrialization and Households; Life Expectancy and Fertility; Marriages and Parenthood; Divorce and Custody; Remarriage Families; and Conclusion. At the end of each chapter there is a glossary of terms helpful for reading comprehension. There are facts and questions throughout each chapter which encourage investigation, and suggestions for activities which allow students the opportunity to utilize the main concepts are provided.
