Home Alone and Doing Fine: A Guide for Young People in Self-Care.
Lobb, Nancy
Many kids with working parents must take care of themselves before and after school. This activity text offers such children practical instruction and reassuring guidance that can help them be prepared, safe, and confident when they stay alone. The text includes a pullout section for parents that helps them determine if their child is mature enough to stay alone and suggests how to prepare for it. A pullout section for teachers suggests several classroom activities that can help students who look after themselves and includes a quiz answer key and vocabulary list. Eleven chapters cover a variety of topics vital to home alone success. Each chapter includes a topic discussion followed by "What's Your Plan?" or "What Do You Think?" activities for the student. The 11 chapter topics are: (1) getting ready for the day; (2) traveling to and from school; (3) managing the house key; (4) enjoying after school snacks; (5) finding things to do when home alone; (6) getting along with friends and siblings; (7) using the telephone; (8) coping with being scared; (9) handling home emergencies; (10) knowing what to do in case of fire; and (11) using home appliances. A supplement on first-aid shows students how to prepare a first-aid kit, get help in an emergency, handle minor injuries and illnesses, and administer first aid for serious emergencies. (TJQ)
