Cobb's New North American Reader or, Fifth Reading Book
Cobb, Lyman
B. Davenport
This textbook is a fifth reader. In this series, all the new words contained in each reading lesson, are placed at the head of the lesson, divided, pronounced, accented, and defined, with the part of speech designated. The scholar will thus have an opportunity to become acquainted with the spelling, pronunciation, accentuation, part of speech, and definition of all the words in each lesson before he reads them; or, if already acquainted with their orthography and pronunciation, he can go over these as a kind of review, while learning the definitions of the words. This reader contains lessons in prose and poetry. Writings by authors such as W. Gilmore Simms, J.K. Paulding, Gulian C. Verplanck, Bishop Hobart, Willis Gaylord Clark, Amelia B. Welby, and Richard H. Dana are presented.
