A survey of 16 optometry schools shows foreign student enrollment up from 1.1 percent to 2.1 percent of total enrollment between 1977-78 and 1989-90. A rapid increase in Canadian students is noted, with growth from 19 percent to 54.4 percent of all foreign enrollment. Opportunities for improving the field worldwide are seen in these trends. (MSE)

Data from 1981-90 graduating classes at the 81 medical schools graduating the most family physicians confirmed that declining class size correlates with even greater decline in production of family physicians. Financing issues associated with the evolution of Argentina's national universities, 1960-90, are examined. Major trends in student population, faculty, and government spending are outlined, the teaching and research market is discussed, and several proposals to ease constraints are presented and analyzed for feasibility.
