Facilitating Student-Created Math Walks
Wang, Min; Walkington, Candace; Dhingra, Koshi
Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12, v114 n9 p670-676 Sep 2021
A math walk is a planned walk during which students talk about mathematical concepts embedded in their everyday environments. The walk is based on relatively permanent objects or locations, such as trees, artworks, playground equipment, and building elements, and can be shared with the broader school community in a variety of different ways. In this article, the authors present the steps to creating a math walk with an example of a project created by students in the 3-5 grade band in an after-school setting. The authors hope this article will present interested educators with tools and suggestions to implement such a project in their schools, either as a rich in-class or after-school experience.
