Really Easy Sensational Physical Education Cooperative Tasks (R.E.S.P.E.C.T.)
Hjelm, Beth
Teaching Elementary Physical Education, v17 n5 p37-40 Sep 2006
While adventure activities seem a natural fit for middle elementary, teachers often overlook the importance of cooperative or team building activities with younger students (K-2). This could be due to a lack of knowledge or the misconception that one needs a climbing wall or other low level initiatives to offer such a program. When designing cooperative activities for younger elementary students that are intended to build a sense of community, it is not absolutely necessary to have a lot of specialized equipment. This article shares large group, partner, and station activities--as well as organizational strategies-- that can be implemented in a unit on cooperation skills with little equipment or items that can be handmade.
