Spindler, Richard
Teaching Mathematics and Its Applications: An International Journal of the IMA, v25 n3 p120-126 2006
The experience tutoring a student who is blind in four semesters of university calculus is discussed. The mechanics, instructional strategies employed, and the challenges encountered are examined as they relate to teaching mathematics. It was found there are important similarities and also differences as compared to sighted students in teaching strategies, including proper verbal wording of formulas, using simple manipulatives, and repetition. Challenges encountered include instructor resistance, higher dimensional problems, and mental fatigue.
