Need a Special Tool? Make It Yourself!
Mordini, Robert D.
Tech Directions, v66 n6 p24-25 Jan 2007
People seem to have created a tool for every purpose. If a person searches diligently, he can usually find the tool he needs. However, several things may affect this process such as time, cost of the tool, and limited tool sources. The solution to all these is to make the tool yourself. People have made tools for many thousands of years, and with basic knowledge, some raw materials and a heat source, teachers and their students can also make tools. Doing so requires designing the tool, taking measurements, and making sketches and drawings to ensure proper functioning. Depending on the application, to function optimally some tools must be tough, some hard, some a combination. In this article, the author describes construction of a 1/8" mortising wood chisel from oil hardened AlAl 01 tool steel using the stock removal process. (Contains 2 tables and 7 photos.)
