Katz and Aakhus' Theory of Apparatgeist: Students' Perceptions of Normative and Non-Normative Behaviors for Technology Use

Today's students live in a mobile society beset with technologies that allow them to communicate through a wide variety of mediums. Mobile phones, for example, have become the fastest growing technology in history. Students have traditionally been at the forefront of most societal changes and this recent technological influx is certainly no exception. This classroom activity explores the norms that students assign to technology use. One particular theory that addresses the issue of norms and mobile phone use is the Katz and Aakhus' Theory of Apparatgeist. Through an exploration of practical situations in which information and communication technologies (ICTs) are used, students can understand the role that communication (both verbal and nonverbal) plays in the process of norm creation. A list of references and suggested readings is included.
