Bennett, Randy Elliot – Review of Research in Education, 2015
On the surface, this chapter concerns the evolution of educational assessment from a paper-based technology to an electronic one. On a deeper level, that evolution is more substantive. In the first section of this chapter, those stages are briefly described and used to place the new generation of assessments being created by the two comprehensive…

Bennett, Randy Elliot – Educational Testing Service, 2011
CBAL, an acronym for Cognitively Based Assessment of, for, and as Learning, is a research initiative intended to create a model for an innovative K-12 assessment system that provides summative information for policy makers, as well as formative information for classroom instructional purposes. This paper summarizes empirical results from 16 CBAL…

Bennett, Randy Elliot; Morley, Mary; Quardt, Dennis – Applied Psychological Measurement, 2000
Describes three open-ended response types that could broaden the conception of mathematical problem solving used in computerized admissions tests: (1) mathematical expression (ME); (2) generating examples (GE); and (3) and graphical modeling (GM). Illustrates how combining ME, GE, and GM can form extended constructed response problems. (SLD)

Kaplan, Randy M.; Bennett, Randy Elliot – 1994
This study explores the potential for using a computer-based scoring procedure for the formulating-hypotheses (F-H) item. This item type presents a situation and asks the examinee to generate explanations for it. Each explanation is judged right or wrong, and the number of creditable explanations is summed to produce an item score. Scores were…

Bennett, Randy Elliot; Steffen, Manfred; Singley, Mark Kevin; Morley, Mary; Jacquemin, Daniel – Journal of Educational Measurement, 1997
Scoring accuracy and item functioning were studied for an open-ended response type test in which correct answers can take many different surface forms. Results with 1,864 graduate school applicants showed automated scoring to approximate the accuracy of multiple-choice scoring. Items functioned similarly to other item types being considered. (SLD)

Sandene, Brent; Horkay, Nancy; Bennett, Randy Elliot; Allen, Nancy; Braswell, James; Kaplan, Bruce; Oranje, Andreas – National Center for Education Statistics, 2005
This publication presents the reports from two studies, Math Online (MOL) and Writing Online (WOL), part of the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) Technology-Based Assessment (TBA) project. Funded by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), the Technology-Based Assessment project is intended to explore the use of new…

Bennett, Randy Elliot; And Others – Applied Psychological Measurement, 1990
The relationship of an expert-system-scored constrained free-response item type to multiple-choice and free-response items was studied using data for 614 students on the College Board's Advanced Placement Computer Science (APCS) Examination. Implications for testing and the APCS test are discussed. (SLD)

Bennett, Randy Elliot; Rock, Donald A. – 1993
Formulating-Hypotheses (F-H) items present a situation and ask the examinee to generate as many explanations for it as possible. This study examined the generalizability, validity, and examinee perceptions of a computer-delivered version of the task. Eight F-H questions were administered to 192 graduate students. Half of the items restricted…

Singley, Mark K.; Bennett, Randy Elliot – 1995
One of the main limitations of the current generation of computer-based tests is its dependency on the multiple-choice item. This research was aimed at extending computer-based testing by bringing limited forms of performance assessment to it in the domain of mathematics. This endeavor involves not only building task types that better reflect…

Bennett, Randy Elliot; Persky, Hilary; Weiss, Andrew R.; Jenkins, Frank – National Center for Education Statistics, 2007
The Problem Solving in Technology-Rich Environments (TRE) study was designed to demonstrate and explore innovative use of computers for developing, administering, scoring, and analyzing the results of National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) assessments. Two scenarios (Search and Simulation) were created for measuring problem solving…

Bennett, Randy Elliot; Sebrechts, Marc M. – 1994
This study evaluated expert system diagnoses of examinees' solutions to complex constructed-response algebra word problems. Problems were presented to three samples (30 college students each), each of which had taken the Graduate Record Examinations General Test. One sample took the problems in paper-and-pencil form and the other two on computer.…
