Family Living/Including Sex Education 1985-86. OEA Evaluation Report.
Guerrero, Frank; And Others
The 1985-86 implementation of the comprehensive, sequenced curriculum called Family Living Including Sex Education Program in the New York City public schools is evaluated in this document. Curriculum content includes human growth and development, family relationships, friendship, reproduction, decision-making, child sexual abuse, and acquired immune deficiency syndrome. It is noted that, in the 1985-86 school year, 185 elementary schools and 65 junior high schools used the program. Topics covered in this report include: (1) an introduction to the program background, goals, and evaluation as well as the population served; (2) methodology and data sources of the evaluation; (3) program implementation including program description, staff responsibility, advisory councils, implementation strategies, use of curriculum, parent involvement, staff development, staff perception, 1986-87 district plans, and implementation of the curriculum in high schools and its adaptation for special education; (4) site visits at elementary schools, junior high schools, and high schools; and (5) student outcomes. The report concludes that the implementation was successful and recommends more teacher inservice training, more district responsibility, better student assessment instruments, more time devoted to the curriculum, and further efforts to bring nonparticipating schools into the program.
