ARL Statistics, 2000-01: A Compilation of Statistics from the One Hundred and Twenty-Four Members of the Association of Research Libraries.
Kyrillidou, Martha, Comp.; Young, Mark, Comp.
This document is the latest in a series of annual publications that describe collections, staffing, expenditures, and service activities for the 123 members of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL). Of these, 113 are university libraries; the remaining 10 are public, governmental, and private research libraries. ARL member libraries are the largest research libraries in North America, representing 16 Canadian and 107 U.S. research institutions. The academic libraries, which comprise about 92% of the membership, include 14 Canadian and 99 U.S. libraries. The total library expenditures of all 123 member libraries in 2000-01 was more than $3 billion; from that, about $2.3 billion was spent by the 113 university libraries and just over $727 million by the nonuniversity libraries. An introduction discusses ARL statistics trends, including evolution of statistical categories definitions; service activity trends; change in serial unit costs; and ownership and access. Five graphs and five tables in this section provide ARL libraries statistics. The next section of the report consists of ARL library data tables and summary data tables for 2000-01 in the areas of collections, expenditures, and personnel and public services. A table of percentages and ratios presenting 16 select indicators that describe the condition of ARL university libraries is provided. This is followed by a table of Ph.D., faculty, and enrollment statistics and summary data. A final table presents a summary of rank for each university library in each of 18 categories for which individual tables are provided. Also included are the ARL Statistics Questionnaire and Instructions, 2000-01 and footnotes. Appendixes include a list of ARL member libraries as of June 2002 and a bibliography.
