Marsh, Herbert W.; Ginns, Paul; Morin, Alexandre J. S.; Nagengast, Benjamin; Martin, Andrew J. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 2011
Recently graduated university students from all Australian Universities rate their overall departmental and university experiences (DUEs), and their responses (N = 44,932, 41 institutions) are used by the government to benchmark departments and universities. We evaluate this DUE strategy of rating overall departments and universities rather than…

Marsh, Herbert W.; Muthen, Bengt; Asparouhov, Tihomir; Ludtke, Oliver; Robitzsch, Alexander; Morin, Alexandre J. S.; Trautwein, Ulrich – Structural Equation Modeling: A Multidisciplinary Journal, 2009
This study is a methodological-substantive synergy, demonstrating the power and flexibility of exploratory structural equation modeling (ESEM) methods that integrate confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses (CFA and EFA), as applied to substantively important questions based on multidimentional students' evaluations of university teaching…

Marsh, Herbert W. – International Journal of Educational Research, 1987
The validity of students' evaluations of university teacher effectiveness must be demonstrated through a construct validation approach. Empirical relations between students' evaluations of teaching effectiveness (such as the Students' Evaluation of Educational Quality instrument) and other indicators of effective teaching are examined. (SLD)

Marsh, Herbert W.; Roche, Lawrence A. – American Psychologist, 1997
Reviews research on the multidimensionality of effective teaching and student ratings. Recommends the adoption of a broad construct approach to evaluation of validity criteria and potential biases in different contexts, especially in relation to multiple criteria of effective teaching, theory, and existing knowledge. (MMU)

Marsh, Herbert W. – 1987
H. W. Marsh's monograph (1987) on students' evaluations of teaching effectiveness in higher education is summarized. The research, which emphasized the construct validity approach, led to the development of the Students' Evaluations of Educational Quality (SEEQ) instrument. Factor analysis resulted in identification of nine SEEQ factors--learning…

Marsh, Herbert W.; Hocevar, Dennis – American Educational Research Journal, 1984
A multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) matrix was formed in which nine evaluation dimensions were the multiple traits, and different offerings of the same course were the multiple methods. Findings from the MTMM analysis and confirmatory factor analysis provide strong evidence for the multidimensionality of student ratings. (Author/BW)

Marsh, Herbert W.; Roche, Lawrence A. – Australian Journal of Education, 1992
In five studies, the applicability of two North American instruments for student evaluation of teacher performance was assessed at the University of Western Sydney (Macarthur, Australia). Results of a multitrait-multimethod analysis indicate the instruments are applicable at this institution and across diverse educational settings. (Author/MSE)

Marsh, Herbert W.; And Others – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1979
College faculty evaluated their own teaching and were evaluated by their students in each of two courses. There was considerable student-faculty agreement in the ratings obtained. Separate factor analyses indicated that similar dimensions underlay both student and faculty evaluations. Validity coefficients were statistically significant for all…

Marsh, Herbert W.; Overall, J. U. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1980
Students' evaluations of teaching were validated against both cognitive and affective criteria of effective instruction. End-of-term ratings correlated more highly with the criteria than did the midterm ratings. Both cognitive and affective criteria were correlated with different components of the student ratings, but not with each other.…

Marsh, Herbert W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1984
Findings and research designs used to study university students' evaluations of teaching effectiveness are reviewed. A construct validation approach which recognizes the multidimensionality of both effective teaching and students' evaluations is recommended for further research. (BS)

Marsh, Herbert W. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1982
Results of this study demonstrate student-instructor agreement on evaluations of teaching effectiveness, support the validity of student ratings for both graduate and undergraduate courses, and emphasize the importance of using multifactor rating scales that are derived through the application of factor analysis. (Author/AL)

Marsh, Herbert W.; Hau, Kit-Tai; Chung, Choi-Man; Siu, Teresa L. P. – Journal of Educational Psychology, 1997
The applicability of a Chinese translation of the Students' Evaluation of Educational Quality (SEEQ) (H. W. Marsh, 1982 and later) and the generality of findings based on North American research were studied with 844 students at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Results support the use of the SEEQ in this Chinese setting. (SLD)

Marsh, Herbert W.; Hocevar, Dennis – 1980
Campbell and Fiske (1959) developed four criteria of construct validity when measures of more than one trait are obtained with more than one method. In this study these criteria are compared with two other procedures--an analysis of variance (ANOVA) model and confirmatory factor analysis--for analyzing multitrait-multimethod (MTMM) data. The…

Marsh, Herbert W. – 1980
Research that led to the development of an instrument and a program for collecting students' evaluations of college/university teaching is summarized. The current version of Students' Evaluation of Educational Quality (SEEQ), which is appended, was developed at the University of Southern California (USC). (The first SEEQ was developed at the…

Marsh, Herbert W. – International Journal of Educational Research, 1987
A number of research reports and meta analyses on student evaluation of college teaching were reviewed. Student ratings were found to be multidimensional, reliable, valid, and relatively unbiased. Results were useful for feedback, course selection, and personnel decisions. Marsh's Students' Evaluations of Educational Quality (SEEQ) was also…
