As researchers at a testing organization concerned with the appropriate uses and validity evidence for our assessments, we provide an applied perspective related to the issues raised in the focus article. Newton's proposal for elaborating the consensus definition of validity is offered with the intention to reduce the risks of inadequate validation practice. His article is taken in the spirit of helping our profession to improve with the ultimate goal of protecting the public in the interpretation and use of test scores, and we wholeheartedly support his intent. However, we wonder if not more can be done, in particular, from a practitioner's viewpoint. Specifically, we address (a) the question of whether the proposed changes to the definition will improve validation practice, (b) theoretical versus practical issues and implications for promoting rigorous validity research, and (c) possible next steps for our profession.
