Learning Opportunities for Your Child through Alternate Assessments
Quenemoen, Rachel; Thurlow, Martha
US Department of Education
The purpose of this booklet is to introduce parents of students with disabilities to the "big ideas" contained in school improvement efforts under the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and to provide them with the information they need to help ensure that their children can benefit from these efforts. The discussion revolves around the following themes: (1) how expectations for students with disabilities are set under NCLB and IDEA; (2) how their academic achievement is assessed; (3) access to grade-level content for students with disabilities; (4) how decisions about the manner in which a disabled student will take an assessment are made; and (5) the importance of including all students in statewide assessments and accountability. At the end of this booklet, parents will find some suggested sources of additional information that they can use so that their child benefits from the nationwide education reform and accountability efforts intended to ensure high expectations for all children.
