Empowered and Connected: A Preliminary Study of the Collegiate Soprano-Alto Choir Experience
Alicia Canterbury Vorel; Elizabeth Richardson Hearn
Contributions to Music Education, v50 p21-43 2025
In this preliminary descriptive study, we surveyed choristers (N = 66) about their experiences in three collegiate soprano-alto (SA) midlevel choirs, where mixed (SATB) ensembles were the premiere ensemble. We examined the musical, social, and personal dimensions of the participants' experiences in a collegiate SA choir and their attitudes regarding ensemble identity within a choral hierarchy. Our findings indicated that the participants had primarily positive perceptions of their SA choir experience. Although they reported feelings of community and pride facilitated by high musical expectations and healthy vocal experiences, when asked to consider their experience within the context of the hierarchy, participants reported decreased feelings of respect, value, and musical appeal. An emerging finding was that many of the participants highly valued rehearsing and performing in a setting predominantly comprised of female peers. We posit that stereotype and gender theories may help explain the tension experienced by SA choristers.
