Gay and Sexual Minority Male Veterans in Higher Education: A Qualitative Analysis of the Post-Secondary Experiences of Sexual Minority Male Veterans
Ryan T. Kasmier
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, California Lutheran University
Little is known about the higher education experiences of gay and sexual minority male veterans. This study utilizes a general qualitative design to explore these experiences. Using Phillips and Lincoln's (2017) Veteran Critical Theory as a theoretical framework, I explore the supports and barriers that gay and sexual minority male veterans experience in higher education. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with seven participants, I find that this population experiences many barriers in higher education, including homophobia and financial insecurity. Factors that supported a successful experience for gay and sexual minority male veterans included a positive campus climate for student veterans, access to mental health counseling, and participation in co-curricular activities. This study highlights the need for continued research on the experiences of LGBTQ+ experiences, including research that considers the role of the co-curriculum in helping queer veterans build relationships on campus.
