Re-Imagining the Citizenship Class toward Student Civic Engagement and Advocacy
Dugger, Anne L.; Wassink, Mari Hunt
COABE Journal: The Resource for Adult Education, v9 n2 Article 5 p38-41 Win 2020-2021
Citizenship classes are often taught directly to the test. Creating meaningful dialogue within the confines of a set vocabulary list, 100 questions, and a time limit can often prove difficult. Creating not only new citizens but citizens who are connected to their community and who are leaders/advocates for the people in their community is the main goal for this new citizenship class. This article explores one community-based program's re-imagining of what a citizenship class can be and explains the process of developing the vision and curriculum for such a class.
