Elementary School Counselors' Understanding of Conflict Resolution for Classroom Management: A Generic Qualitative Study
Deanna D. Holmes
ProQuest LLC, Ph.D. Dissertation, Capella University
Conflicts within the school setting include negative behaviors to include: withdrawing from class discussions, initiating physical altercations with other students to include fights, verbal disputes with other students and authority figures and damaging school property. Studies indicate there is a need for more research to determine whether teaching conflict resolution is a positive method to helping children resolve conflicts. The research literature on classroom management indicates that we know teachers use a wide range of classroom management practices such as conflict resolution for classroom management, but we do not know elementary school counselors' understanding, experiences, and use of conflict resolution as a method for classroom management. This study was conducted to understand elementary school counselors' experience of conflict resolution when working with students, teachers, and parents for classroom management.
