Takadimi: A Rhythm System for All Ages
Ester, Don P.; Scheib, John W.; Inks, Kimberly J.
Music Educators Journal, v93 n2 p60 Nov 2006
The fundamental goal of music-literacy instruction is to connect sound to symbol. An essential aspect of this process is audiation. Literate musicians make accurate matches between what they audiate and what they visualize. They establish this link by interacting with the symbolic language of music in both directions: translating notation into sound and translating sound into notation. However, this approach is impractical for young students who cannot read and do not understand notation. To help all students of various ages, music theorists Richard Hoffman, William Pelto, and John W. White designed a rhythm-pedagogy system call Takadimi that is based on research, learning theory, and best-practice methods. This article describes how Takadimi works and the benefits of using it in teaching rhythm instruction to students of various ages. (Contains 4 figures and 7 notes.)
