A Correlational Study of Inclusionary Classrooms and General Education Teacher Turnover
Tosha Lakita Leonard
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to analyze the extent to which the proportion of IEP students in inclusionary classrooms covaried with turnover intention for K-5 general education teachers in Florida. The researcher employed a quantitative research approach with a correlational research design. The sample was drawn on Survey Monkey from a target population of general education teachers teaching in a Florida public elementary school. The sample size of 119 participants was determined using an a "priori power" analysis through G*Power version 3.1.9.7. Data were collected using the Turnover Intention Scale (TIS-6) with a demographic survey requiring information from the sample regarding the quantity of IEP students in the classroom, the ratio of IEP students to general education students in the classroom, teacher age, teacher gender, the years of service of the teacher with IEP students in their classroom, and turnover intention. Data analysis was divided into four stages: Demographic characteristics, descriptive statistics, testing for statistical assumptions, and hypothesis testing and consisted of the researcher using SPSS software to determine statistical analysis. While the findings were not significant in determining a positive correlation between K-5 general education teachers of IEP students in inclusionary classrooms and turnover intent, the overall results suggested that age and teaching experience may considerably impact teacher turnover intent. Thus, these suggestions warrant further investigation, assessment, exploration, and analysis regarding age and teaching experience correlated to the turnover intent of general educators who teach IEP students in an inclusionary classroom setting.
