WOW! Mathematics Convention: A Community Connection
Cavazos, Rebecca R.
Teaching Children Mathematics, v21 n3 p154-160 Oct 2014
This article details how certain mathematical "discoveries" that Cavazos' fourth graders made were recorded throughout the year. Cavazos invited a math professor, a biologist, a literacy professor, a chemist, a statistician, and an engineering student, as well as their school principal and computer lab technician, both of whom are math enthusiasts, into her classroom for the First Annual WOW! Mathematics Convention to help students investigate the "why" behind certain patterns in numbers that they noticed throughout the year. The intent of this activity was to share one way that she could successfully integrate the community into her classroom, which ultimately benefited community members and students alike. The STEM community proved to be a valuable resource in validating students' mathematical thinking, collaborating to tackle challenging math problems, and empowering them to go beyond what they deemed themselves capable of.
