"Not" an Unfeasible "Extra"
Howard, Maria Elena
Science and Children, v49 n4 p32-35 Dec 2011
This article discusses how blogging helps elementary students communicate and reflect on their science practice. In early 2011, the author found the Teacher Challenge. Offered through Edublogs, the Teacher Challenge offers teachers step-by-step guidance to create their own professional blogs to reflect on their practice, all the while connecting with other teachers. The Teacher Challenge highlighted how smart, talented teachers were effectively using blogs in their classrooms to provide a platform for students to communicate what they were learning to classmates, family, friends, and other students and teachers. Blogs, the author learned, were not an unfeasible "extra," but the key to making science writing meaningful. A blog also provides a permanent record of student work that can move with them from year to year. (Contains 1 figure and 9 online resources.)
