Revisiting Computer-Aided Notetaking Technological Assistive Devices for Hearing-Impaired Students
Stover, Dana L.; Pendegraft, Norman
Clearing House: A Journal of Educational Strategies, Issues and Ideas, v79 n2 p94-97 Nov-Dec 2005
The first part of this article describes the use of Computer-aided note taking (CAN) for a fifth-grade student with a profound hearing loss who has been mainstreamed in her local grade school since first grade. As such, this is a case study of how technology can directly and dramatically impact the educational experience of a student with a disability. The results of this program have been significant. The second part of the article discusses a survey the authors conducted among special education administrators and specialists in a northwestern state. Evidence suggests that despite the availability and efficacy of CAN systems, relatively few school district specialists are aware of these technologies. The authors argue that a broader attention to and understanding of CAN systems will encourage more school districts to experiment with this technology for their hearing-impaired students. Students with hearing loss have primarily relied on three main technologies to access classroom information: FM systems, note-takers and, more recently, real-time captioning (RTC). Each of these options, is briefly discussed in the next section, and limitations are described. The final option, CAN technology: a small local area network using inexpensive laptop computers and standard software that the authors implemented for a student at a local elementary school is presented.
