Sage Research Methods Cases
This case study exemplifies an experimental design to measure the effectiveness of a new educational approach compared to the conventional approach. The researchers were interested in the impacts that reading culturally responsive Young Adult novels might have on eighth grade students' reading comprehension. Students were randomly assigned to the experimental or control groups, in which the curriculum varied, and then the two groups' reading performance was compared following the implementation of the different curricula. This case study shares our decision-making process throughout the planning, implementation, and analysis of this study, which provides evidence to support teachers' selection of texts that match their students' lived experiences. Not all the research decisions were easy, and our goal in this case study is to involve the reader in the moments of uncertainty as the journey unfolded in pursuit of actionable findings. An area of emphasis is the selection of a statistical analysis that matches the research design and that will support the inferences needed to achieve the research purpose. This case also demonstrates that non-significant findings can play a useful role by showing that student performance on high-stakes tests is not impacted by teachers selecting curriculum that reflects their students' lived experiences.
