AERA Online Paper Repository, Paper presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Educational Research Association (San Antonio, TX, Apr 27-May 1, 2017)
As digital and physical fabrication kits become increasingly accessible to novice and youth design and maker activities, efforts are continuing to investigate ways that computing can be inclusive, accessible and culturally responsive. An effort that demonstrates promise for equity is combining multiple toolkits that tap into different affordances and interests, such as coding, design, crafting, and fabrication, through bidirectionally responsive design (BRD). This paper details the unique computational thinking skills and efficacies expressed by high school learners who participated in bidirectionally responsive, wearable game design workshop and created projects of various physical and digital complexity. We contend that the design of bidirectionally responsive projects taps into various related interests and applications that enrich youth's holistic understanding of computing.
