Parent Engagement Online: Understanding How Parents Are Involved at Indiana Connections Academy
Bradley Robert Phillips
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, The Florida State University
Many researchers will comment on how vital parent engagement and participation is for student achievement, but there is limited research on this field in the online realm (Borup et al., 2019). This dissertation examined parent engagement at Indiana Connections Academy over the course of the spring semester of 2023 at the school. Since parent engagement is believed to be beneficial on student achievement, in an online program it is even more vital, as there is no teacher in front of the students on a daily basis. Engagement at the school was believed to be low, and so this study sought to interview fifteen families enrolled in grade nine through twelve about their beliefs and practices in order to see how parents saw themselves fitting into the educational landscape at the school. Families were interviewed twice during the 2023 school year, once in March following the end of the winter enrollment period, and once in May at the conclusion of the school year. The results from these interviews helped to demonstrate that parents are engaging, and by and large, are satisfied with the levels of their engagement. This finding from a qualitative study led to the recommendation that administrators need to reevaluate how they are measuring parent engagement and determine if the current expectations are sufficient. There are many future avenues for research as well, both at this school or comparing this data to other online programs. The data collected for this dissertation helped to answer the two research questions: "How do parents see their role in the school system?" and "Does the perception change over the course of the year?". It helps provide new light and understanding of the problem of practice of perceived disengagement at the school.
