Campus Police Officers Promoting Positive Relationships with College Students: A Qualitative Descriptive Study

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how campus police officers describe the ways they promote positive relationships with college students at selected universities in the southeastern region of the United States. The role ideal model served as the theoretical framework for the study. Two research questions were designed to explore how campus police officers describe the ways they promote positive relationships with college students, and how their roles to contribute to organizational change by promoting positive relationships with college students. Twenty-six individuals (20 police officers and six criminal justice professionals) participated in the study. The data sources were semi-structured interviews and a focus group. The data were analyzed following Braun and Clarke's six phases of inductive thematic analysis. Three themes emerged during analysis. Theme 1 was positive relationships are fostered through engagement. The second theme was serving as communicators and collaborators to promote positive stakeholder relations and a culture of safety. Theme 3 was campus police officers describe the changes needed on college campuses to improve the relationship between officers and students. The results indicated campus police officers use intentional communication practices to improve relationships but also identified training and changes needed to improve the relationships between officers and students. The results of the study may be used to improve relationships between campus police and college students. In addition, the study may be used to develop effective training programs to improve law enforcement and student relationships outside of college campuses.
