Examination of School Counselors' Multicultural Awareness, Racial Match, and Post-Graduate Multicultural Training

This exploratory study examined whether the school counselors' racial match and the type of post-graduate multicultural training predict multicultural awareness for school counselors. Using a predictive correlational research design was the most appropriate for determining a relationship between the variables. The utilization of a predictive correlational research design also answered the following research question that guided this study: to what extent does the racial match of the school counselor and the type of post-graduate multicultural training predict multicultural awareness for school counselors? The study's sample consisted of 114 K-12 school counselors with a master's degree or higher from a CACREP-accredited school counseling program and had participated in post-graduate multicultural training. Participants were required to indicate whether they were a racial match with their student body. The analysis of data using the multicultural awareness subscale on the Multicultural Awareness Knowledge Skills Survey indicated no significant relationship between school counselors who racially match and their level of multicultural awareness. However, this analysis revealed a significant relationship between the type of post-graduate multicultural training and multicultural awareness. Different types of post-graduate multicultural training may impact ideas and allow school counselors to connect with a multicultural group of students in different ways. Understanding the practical implications of the relative effectiveness of different modes of multicultural awareness training is vital for school counselors, counselor educators, and the counseling field in general.
