Improving Rural Attendance: Results from Six Pilots in NCRERN's New York & Ohio Rural Research Network. Updated
Grantee Submission
This brief provides an overview of the four attendance-focused interventions districts partnering with the National Center for Rural Education Research Networks (NCRERN) implemented and evaluated through randomized controlled trials in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 school years. The tested interventions were personalized messaging, mentoring, family engagement, and postcards, each of which aimed to reduce student absences. We found that personalized messaging led to a small to moderate reduction in student absences, while there was no evidence of an effect of the other three interventions. Based on these results, NCRERN recommended that districts scale up or adopt personalized messaging, and either discontinue or revise and retest mentoring, family engagement, and postcards with a focus on implementation fidelity.
