The Seven Cs of Comprehension
Farmer, Michele; Soden, Jackie A.
Voices from the Middle, v13 n2 p20-23 Dec 2005
Federal mandates have created a high-pressure climate of testing in today's classrooms, and educators are left to balance these constantly changing demands with lessons that will challenge the academic lives of their students. Technology and the wealth of information it makes available can and should change teaching and learning, but that requires teachers to be competent users and generators of a wide variety of data. In an effort to develop a reading strategy that would enhance literacy and motivate learners, the authors focused on the logical stages of reading and comprehending text: Connect, Clarify, Consider, Collect, Converse, Conclude, Cite the source. Teachers observed academic gains they attributed to this strategy, and they plan to expand its use in the future. (Contains 1 figure.)
