Advancing Diné Culture and Language: Navajo Tech Launches the First Accredited PhD Program at a Tribal College
Hozien, Wafa
Tribal College Journal of American Indian Higher Education, v35 n1 2023
There has been a steady decline in the number of Indigenous people pursuing and achieving PhD degrees in the U.S. In 2021, barely 0.3% of the 31,674 students in the United States who were conferred PhDs were American Indian or Alaska Native, as there has been lack of support for the advancement of Indigenous students to doctoral-level study. This article describes how Navajo Technical University and the Diné community are celebrating the inauguration of the first accredited PhD program at a tribal college or university in the United States. The Doctor of Philosophy in Diné Culture and Language Sustainability is a full-time degree program that will take students four to five years to complete, with courses traversing diverse disciplines. Students will be exposed to course material that aligns with the Navajo Nation's aim of advancing Diné language and culture in order to help the Navajo way of life flourish, and the program will uphold the university's mission to promote self-determination and empower students to become leaders in their communities. For the Indigenous students who have felt underserved, unsupported, or uninspired to pursue doctoral degrees, the introduction of the PhD program represents a notable advance.
