The Impact of Leadership on Teacher Connectedness: A Case Study
Brian Duane Brumsickle
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northcentral University
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how leadership practices and attitudes affect teacher connectedness. A single research question guided the study: From the perspective of teachers and principals, what practices and attitudes of school leadership can help teachers to become better connected to their schools? Researchers have demonstrated that leadership can positively influence teacher connectedness, improve teacher performance, and affect teacher motivation. Five major themes emerged during analysis corresponding to five critical components of leadership attitudes and practices: developing a clear vision, developing well-received communication, being visible, developing a culture of care, and being engaging. The five main themes appear to work together to create opportunities for leaders to grow and encourage teachers to feel more connected to their schools. The case study was designed to provide thick, rich descriptions of the experiences of teachers of prekindergarten through Grade 12 purposively sampled from an international school in South Korea.
