Children with disabilities, including autism spectrum disorders (ASD), are frequently included in classes with typically developing peers. Although these children may receive instruction on appropriate communication skills, without directly targeting these skills in typical activities, they may not demonstrate these skills when they are with peers. The purpose of this article is to provide recommendations to support the novice play skills of children with ASD. This article describes characteristics of ASD and the research base for use of inclusive preschool play groups and visual scripts with children with ASD to promote communication skills. Furthermore, this article explains, step-by-step, how to implement scripts, a type of visual strategy, within inclusive preschool play groups. Although this article focuses on children with ASD, the authors describe several variations that would assist teachers in implementing this intervention with children who have a variety of disabilities across degrees of severity.
