Vollebregt, Meghan; Leggett, Jana; Raffalovitch, Sherry; King, Colin; Friesen, Deanna; Archibald, Lisa M. D. – Child Language Teaching and Therapy, 2021
There is growing recognition of the need to end the debate regarding reading instruction in favor of an approach that provides a solid foundation in phonics and other underlying language skills to become expert readers. We advance this agenda by providing evidence of specific effects of instruction focused primarily on the written code or on…

Dorman, Rebekah L.; Anthony, Elizabeth; Osborne-Fears, Billie; Fischer, Robert L. – Early Years: An International Journal of Research and Development, 2017
Large numbers of children of low income families in the United States arrive at kindergarten already far behind their more affluent peers on measures of school readiness. In the absence of any federal preschool policy and amidst alarm about this growing divide, universal prekindergarten (UPK) programs have been launched around the United States,…

Karen L. Bierman; Meghan E. McDoniel; John E. Loughlin-Presnal – Grantee Submission, 2019
Preschool parent interventions may produce downstream benefits if initial intervention gains are sustained and improve later socialization experiences. In experimental studies, researchers are often interested in secondary research questions that explore important aspects of main findings, such as whether or not program effects vary according to the level of fidelity in which the program has been implemented; or according to the dosage received by individuals participated in the program. In this…

Curry, Janice – Online Submission, 2009
Austin Independent School District provided full-day prekindergarten to 5,196 4-year-olds in 2008-2009 at 66 schools. Seventy percent or more of students made measureable gains on a test of receptive vocabulary, and average gains showed growth about two times greater than that expected for 4-year-olds after a 7-month period.
