Building a Better Environment
Vieth, Ken
SchoolArts: The Art Education Magazine for Teachers, v106 n8 p38-39 Apr 2007
As an art educator, the author understands how simple materials can be used to create complex structures. Yet, sometimes what everyone needs is a spark of inspiration to connect those available materials to have an idea grow to fruition. When teachers allow themselves to think creatively, they can inspire their students to greater understanding of both materials and process. For a number of years, the author has worked with a highly creative nonprofit organization called Architectural Workshops, located in Cambridge, England. His position with this organization has varied over time as he has presented workshops in Cambridge, England and at the Pompidou Center in Paris. This article discusses exercises involved in the workshops such as team-building exercises and visual problem solving which help students achieve a greater understanding of math and design.
